The Must-Have Pieces From Day 1 of Fashion Week

At my favorite show of the day, Tome went for an international vibe, with an Indian soundtrack streaming throughout the show and Japanese references peppered among the silhouettes. A highlight was the evening wear, which was simple and modern with a dramatic elegance, and finished off with a delightfully unique jewelry collaboration from Lizzie Fortunato. The necklaces were reverse chokers that sat at the base of the neck with two flower petals on each end. They were so fresh and so easily styled that I might just turn my choker around, stat. One of the best looks was this trench dress that acts as a hybrid coat and RTW piece all in one. Something that makes a strong statement but is still easily wearable gives me hope for spring.

Creatures of the Wind

CFDA winners Shane Gabier and Christopher Peters of Creatures of the Wind are known for their creativity and quirky brand of artsy chic. This season, the duo’s collection was light and colorful, with a slightly masculine edge. My favorite look from this show featured a red and white striped pant. A stripe is always wonderfully easy to wear, but after exhausting the classic Breton, it’s refreshing to see some alternatives being worked into the mix.

Honor

I don’t know how Giovanna Randall of Honor knew that button candy was my absolute favorite, but I practically jumped onto the runway to investigate whether the details on her spring collection dresses were indeed edible. Sadly, they were not, but that didn’t make them any less fun. Fellow ELLE.com editor Faran Krentcil called this collection “Betty Draper goes to Candy Land,” and with lovely throwback silhouettes and a serenely pastel palette, the collection seemed to be just that. My favorite look was a tiered, white, off-the-shoulder gown, perfect for a very stylish bride, but also fitting for anyone traveling through, say, the Gumdrop Mountains.

Coach

Stuart Vevers delivered an excellent fall collection last season, so the bar had been set very high for his spring 2015 wares. We needn’t have worried, however: The designer rose to the occasion, producing a fresh and surprising show. Capturing the look of the cool, teen girl (think an updated Marcia Brady meets Clarissa Darling vibe), Vevers added sophistication and edge to make our teenage dreams age appropriate. My favorite look was a leopard print mini skirt with a matching platformed slip-on sandal. Plus, I’m so happy to see we aren’t giving up on the comfy sandal trend for next season.

BCBG

If BCBG was outfitting the next karate kid, I’m sure she’d be cast as a badass girl who wears pink, but isn’t afraid to kick some butt. The very mellow BCBG show featured a muted pastel palette and some very Japanese references: everything from cherry blossom prints to obi-tie details. My favorite BCBG look was a pink midi dress that mimicked an overalls silhouette: very billowy and backless but—just like the ideal karate kid—very functional and graceful.
