How to wear: Nautical fashion without looking like a sea dog

Traditionally the preserve of old-money types with nasal accents, this season’s ode to seafaring fashion will feature something a little different from the usual above-the- knee light blue shorts and horizontal blue stripes.

“Nautical is big right now, especially colourful shorts. You are seeing a lot of blues, reds and whites but you are also seeing yellows and greens. To go with those colourful shorts are some really awesome tropical shirts,” said Jason Brown, editor of South African Men’s Health magazine.

In essence, this season’s nautical theme is the skhothane popping into Tommy Hilfiger and coming out looking uber-snazzy without losing touch with his floral roots.

The beauty of the nautical look is that, like the answers to a woodwork exam, it is very hard to get wrong and can be mixed and matched to suit your personal tastes.

For those of a more conservative nature, simply sticking with a mix of different but complementary bold colours for the shirt and shorts is perfect. Those with more flair can throw in floral prints and even a polka-dot bow tie. Boat shoes, loafers or espadrilles are the safe bet.

There is a school that says Birkenstocks also work, but one should take that advice with a pinch of salt. They look like the shoe of choice for gentlemen over the age of 67, and also require that one has publicly viewable toes, a rare characteristic among men.
