Second spectacular kermesse at the ‘XX Maremma Cup’ in Tuscany
MTB champions offer a great show along the seafront
Next step in Grosseto tomorrow and back to Massa Marittima for the week-end
The third chapter of the 2010 ‘XX Maremma Cup’ speaks Dutch. The 26 year-old Rudi Van Houts won yesterday’s race in a warm and sunny day. Italian Marco Aurelio Fontana and Swiss Andreas Kugler finished second and third respectively.
After the first two successful races along the streets and through the XC circuit in Massa Marittima, yesterday the bikers moved to Porto Santo Stefano, a beautiful seaside resort town on Monte Argentario in Maremma region.
The competition took place along the seafront, on a brief and fast circuit, flanked by the beautiful Italian sea. Fontana took immediately an early lead and won the first heat, making the local public dream. However, in the final heat, the Italian rider had to face the strong competition from the Merida team, namely Rudi Van Houts and Andreas Kugler. The Dutch yesterday was simply superb, and crossed the finish line ahead of the other two. Swiss Patrick Gallati finished in fourth position, followed by Michele Casagrande, Marcel Wildhaber, Tim Wynants and the former Olympic Champion Bart Brentjes.
Tomorrow the city of Grosseto will host the 4th step of the 2010 ‘XX Maremma Cup’, and next week-end the mtb superstars will move back to Massa Marittima for the last kermesse – on Saturday March 6th – and the XC race – on Sunday March 7th – that is also the opening round of the ‘Internazionali d’Italia’ series.
The two Olympic champions Miguel Martinez and Julien Absalon will also be at the start on Sunday as well as other top bikers, such as Nino Schurter, Tony Longo, Moritz Milatz and Florian Vogel.
The ‘XX Maremma Cup’ organizing committee is supported by the Chamber of Commerce of Grosseto, the Municipalities of Massa Marittima, Monte Argentario and Grosseto and the Monte dei Paschi di Siena Foundation.
