High-level Cross-Country races plus four kermesse races on the city streets: this is 2010 ‘XX Maremma Cup’
A one week-long authentic off-road experience in Tuscany’s Maremma region (Italy)
Thomas Frischknecht is the heart and soul of the event
The event is supported by local authorities and SRAM
Italy’s Maremma region welcomes arms wide open hundreds of bikers for the 2010 ‘XX Maremma Cup’, next February 27th – March 07th.
Throughout the winter it is way harder to ride than in the warm season. Due to cold and bad weather, the tracks appear too risky and unsafe to ride on. However, Tuscany’s Maremma is a happy little island for bikers and cyclists, where temperatures are never too cold and you can ride your bike each time of the year.
Fascinating landscapes, warm hospitality and delicious food are guaranteed in Maremma region and Grosseto province. These are some of the reasons why the Swiss three-time World champion Thomas Frischknecht chose the city of Massa Marittima as his ‘vacation house’. For those who are not too familiar with the mtb world, Frischknecht counts a silver Olympic medal, 15 medals in World Championships, 3 overall World Cup titles plus 18 World Cup victories, one European title and much more, among his palmares.
Together with another great mtb lover as Ernst Hutmacher, and the ASD Maremma Cup OC, Frischknecht managed to create an event in 2009 – two XC races and two promotional races, also named ‘kermesse race’ – which brought to Tuscany a big bunch of mtb champions and amateurs. The first ‘Maremma Cup’ was an authentic success that has to be repeated this year.
In 2010 the event will kick off on February 27th and will change its name to ‘XX Maremma Cup’, under the terms of a new agreement signed by SRAM, one of the world’s leading providers of high quality bicycle components, which is testing his new products – including the XX series – in the Italian region
The 2010 ‘XX Maremma Cup’ will be the opening round of the ‘Internazionali d’Italia’ series, the most important MTB Cross Country Challenge in the country, and will offer an entire week of outdoor brilliant events .
On Saturday 27th February, the competitors will get on the saddle in Massa Marittima main square, outside the romanic cathedral, for the first kermesse that will run on a circuit along the narrow city streets. Three more kermesses will take place on Tuesday 2nd March in Porto Santo Stefano, on Thursday 04th March in Grosseto and on the following Saturday in Massa Marittima once again.
On Sunday 28th February the 2010 ‘XX Maremma Cup’ will dive into the atmosphere of the countryside, just outside the city of Massa Marittima, for the exciting Italy’s XC Winter Grand Prix, open to different age categories (Elite, Junior, Under 23 and Master). On the same circuit – start and finish will be inside the football stadium – the opening round of the ‘Internazionali d’Italia’ series will kick off on Sunday 07th March. And the picture is complete.
The 2010 ‘XX Maremma Cup’ will be a real parade of mtb super stars. Among them, the starting list already reads the names of Absalon, Schurter, Vogel, Hermida, Brentjes, Martinez, Näf, Paez, Fontana and Fruet. Among women, Lechner, Schneitter and Campuzano already booked their numbers as well
