GIORNATE NAZIONALI PER LA RICERCA SENZA USO DI ANIMALI: DOMANI E
DOMENICA 25 MARZO LA LAV IN 350 PIAZZE D’ITALIA CON IL SOSTEGNO DI DECINE

Sabato 24 e domenica 25 marzo Giornate nazionali per la ricerca
senza uso di animali: in 350 piazze d’Italia i cittadini potranno firmare la petizione della LAV a sostegno della proposta di “Piano Nazionale per i Metodi Alternativi” in
applicazione del Programma di Governo e in vista della revisione
dell’ormai ventennale Direttiva Europea UE 86/609 sulla sperimentazione
animale, recepita in Italia nel 1992 con il Decreto Legislativo 116. I
cittadini potranno ricevere materiale informativo sul tema, firmare la
petizione e sostenere questa campagna scegliendo l’uovo di Pasqua della LAV, in cambio di un contributo

Molte decine i ricercatori e altri operatori
della comunità scientifica che sostengono questa campagna, tra questi: Annalaura Stammati (Istituto
Superiore di Sanità), Chiara Scanarotti (Dipertimento di Medicina Sperimentale
dell’Università di Genova), Gianni Tamino (docente di biologia
all’Università di Padova), Stefano Cagno (psichiatra, dirigente medico
ospedaliero), Gerardo Catalano (Dipartimento di Ingegneria chimica e dei
Materiali dell’Università della Calabria), Massimo Buscema (Direttore del
Centro di Ricerca in Scienze della Comunicazione Semeion di Roma), i numerosi
ricercatori aderenti a IPAM, la Piattaforma Italiana per i Metodi Alternativi (www.ipamitalia.it). Ricercatori ed esperti da ogni zona
d’Italia, con diverse competenze: dall’impiego di colture cellulari, di
organi e tessuti artificiali, a modelli informatici per la simulazione di
sistemi complessi, tutti concordi sulla discutibilità dell’uso di animali
nella ricerca e sul fatto che i metodi “non animali” sono metodi
rigorosi e scientifici, che subiscono un lungo processo di validazione che
invece l’uso di animali a fini di ricerca non ha mai subito.
Il loro appello, che si unisce a quello della LAV da
trent’anni impegnata in questo settore, è che le istituzioni italiane
dovrebbero impegnarsi maggiormente per rafforzare i finanziamenti e la
diffusione di metodi sostitutivi all’uso di animali, con il vantaggio di
essere oltre che efficaci, anche più economici e pratici dell’uso di animali.
Un obiettivo condiviso anche dal Sottosegretario
alla Salute Gian Paolo Patta che ieri ha ricevuto dalla LAV la
proposta di “Il Piano Nazionale per i Metodi Alternativi” e ha
sollecitato un immediato confronto tra Ministero della Salute, LAV e comunità
scientifica su tali proposte in vista della revisione della direttiva UE.
“Oggi i metodi sostitutivi sono inseriti
in legislazioni internazionali e impiegati in campi sempre più numerosi
nonostante chi, da sempre, sostenga che "non sia possibile fare a meno
di usare animali": dal test di gravidanza che oggi si esegue a casa, allo
studio della tossicità di sostanze chimiche, sempre più si fanno strada
metodi avanzati ed efficaci e sempre più l’uso di animali è criticato
negli ambienti di ricerca – dichiara Roberta

giusta da seguire: le istituzioni nazionale e europee, in vista della

Metodi sostitutivi ai test su animali: perché Sì

* La disponibilità di metodi sostitutivi è ampia anche per altri ambiti,
sebbene il loro ricorso sia lasciato alla volontà dei ricercatori (didattica,
ricerca biomedica, ricerca e sviluppo di farmaci).
Basta volerlo. Dire che “non è possibile” fare a meno degli
animali è indice di un atteggiamento dogmatico che poco si addice a criteri di
ricerca scientifica. L’atteggiamento del ricercatore dovrebbe essere
sempre possibilista, altrimenti non si produrrebbe mai alcun miglioramento.
Sperimentazione animale: perché No
I farmaci sono le uniche sostanze
chimiche per le quali vengono richiesti, per legge, test su animali e test
sull’uomo. Nel passaggio dagli uni agli altri ben 4 molecole su 5 vengono cestinate a causa di incompatibilità
(effetti osservati sull’uomo e non
rilevati sugli animali)[1]. Il 90% dei farmaci
non supera le prove cliniche (test su volontari), mostrando effetti avversi che
sulle prove precliniche (su animali) non erano stati rilevati . L’esempio recente più
eclatante è quello dei sei giovani londinesi finiti in coma durante uno studio
clinico.
Secondo
l’Istituto Superiore di Sanità il 30% della ricerca biomedica viene fatta
su animali, ciò significa che il 70% è condotto utilizzando metodi alternativi.
E’ stato scientificamente
dimostrato (British Medical Journal 2004, Nature 2005), che la messa a
punto di farmaci e terapie che non prevedano esperimenti su animali è possibile
grazie a studi clinici condotti su volontari.
La validità scientifica
dell’uso di animali come modelli dell’uomo si è spesso dimostrata
fuorviante, venendo meno a causa delle sostanziali differenze che esistono tra
organismi umani ed organismi animali. Non è possibile ignorare il fatto che
diversi farmaci precedentemente sperimentati su animali, sono stati in seguito
ritirati dal commercio perché altamente nocivi per l’uomo.
Medicinali
sperimentati su animali che le aziende farmaceutiche sono state costrette a
ritirare dal mercato perché nocivi per l’uomo:
Il
Vioxx (rofecoxib), la Cerivastatina (Lipobay/Baycol), la Rosuvastatina (Crestor), alcuni Antidepressivi: Prozac,
Zoloft, Paxil, Effexor, Il Tequin (Gatifloxacina), Il Gefitinib (Iressa), e alcuni
farmaci impiegati nel trattamento dell’obesità: Aminorex e Fenfluramine nel 1997; Fenilpropanolamina
nel 2000.
Il Vioxx (rofecoxib), insieme ad altri preparati analoghi chiamati
Coxib, è un farmaco antinfiammatorio di
nuova generazione. Nel 2000 uno studio registra un
incremento di 5 volte dell’incidenza di infarto nei pazienti trattati con
rofecoxib (Vioxx) e nel 2004 la Merck (azienda produttrice) lo ritira dal
commercio. Si stima che i decessi siano stati tra 88 mila e 140 mila.
Cerivastatina
(Lipobay/Baycol). Appartiene alla classe
degli anticolesterolo (statine) usati per prevenire eventi coronarici in
pazienti con cardiopatie. Fu ritirato nel 2001 con l’accusa di aver causato
numerosi decessi.
Rosuvastatina
(Crestor). Introdotta sul mercato
nel 2003 è sotto stretta sorveglianza, come le altre statine, per gli alti
rischi cui è associato: danni muscolari, come la rabdomiolisi, e insufficienza
renale. Gli studi preclinici non avevano rilevato questo fenomeno.
Antidepressivi (Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Effexor). Gli
antidepressivi di nuova generazione, erano considerati efficaci anche negli
adolescenti. Nel 2004 la Fda e l’Emea hanno stabilito che l’intera categoria
degli antidepressivi aumenta il rischio di comportamenti suicidi nei pazienti
pediatrici e negli adolescenti.
Tequin (Gatifloxacina):
antibiotico, prodotto dalla società farmaceutica americana Bristol-Myers Squibb
(BMS) e introdotto sul mercato USA nel 1999. BMS ha annunciato di aver
sospeso la produzione e la vendita dell’antibiotico Tequin. A febbraio
2006, la FDA aveva fatto modificare la scheda tecnica di Tequin, in seguito
alla segnalazione di casi di ipoglicemia e di iperglicemia, e controindicando
l’antibiotico ai pazienti affetti da diabete. Inoltre, Tequin poteva
essere dannoso per i pazienti anziani e per i pazienti con disturbi renali. Lo
stesso anno la BMS decide di ritirarlo dal mercato. (fonte: Xagena 2006)
Gefitinib (Iressa): è un farmaco
antitumorale che ha trovato impiego nei pazienti con carcinoma polmonare;
Iressa è stato ritirato dal commercio per il presentarsi di gravi reazioni
avverse: rash, diarrea, acne, secchezza della pelle, nausea e vomito. La
malattia polmonare interstiziale ha rappresentato l’effetto collaterale
più grave, con manifestazioni in circa l’1% dei pazienti a livello
mondiale, e del 2% tra i pazienti giapponesi. (Fonte: Cersosimo RJ, Expert Opin

Alcuni farmaci impiegati nel
trattamento dell’obesità: Aminorex
e fenfluramine nel 1997; Fenilpropanolamina nel 2000. Aminorex era
associato a un’aumentata incidenza di ipertensione polmonare, le
fenfluramine a un aumento dei casi di ipertensione polmonare e di valvulopatia,
e la Fenilpropanolamina a un aumentato rischio di ictus emorragico.
La popolazione a più alto rischio di
questi eventi avversi è quella che ha assunto più alti dosaggi o quella con più
lunga durata di esposizione alle fenfluramine, oltre ai soggetti con
preesistente malattia cardiaca o con una predisposizione genetica. (fonte:

La Chiron ha ritirato
5,5 milioni di dosi del vaccino contro morbillo, parotite e rosolia,
distribuito nei Paesi in via di sviluppo e in Italia. Il vaccino, noto con il
nome di Morupar, ha causato
un’alta incidenza di reazioni avverse, come febbre, reazioni allergiche e
gonfiore ghiandolare, rispetto ad altri vaccini. Le reazioni si presentavano già
dopo l’inoculazione.
Questo è il secondo importante
inconveniente che colpisce Chiron negli ultimi anni. Nel 2004, Chiron non è
stata in grado di produrre il vaccino antinfluenzale per il mercato
statunitense a causa di contaminazioni nel suo impianto produttivo di
Liverpool, in Inghilterra (fonte: Xagena_2006).
Secondo
l’Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità i farmaci essenziali sono 312 (http://whqlibdoc.who.int/hq/2005/a87017_eng.pdf).
Solo in Italia, le specialità farmaceutiche presenti sul mercato sono circa 20.000.
Questi esempi sono indicativi del
fatto che esiste una sostanziale differenza tra individui della stessa specie,
figuriamoci tra animali e umani. Gli esperimenti su animali nello sviluppo dei
farmaci tolgono tempo e denaro e soprattutto forniscono risultati che possono
fuorviare rispetto all’obiettivo.
Test ripetitivi e altre assurdità:
Test per verificare la tossicità di
aspartame e Coca Cola condotti su ratti
presso l’Istituto Ramazzini di Bologna nel 2005 e 2006.
L’FDA
americana ha già condotto studi clinici sull’aspartame; la non salubrità
della Coca Cola è ampiamente nota, uccidere vite per testarne la tossicità può
avere una giustificazione scientifica?
Test su nimesulide presso l’Università
La Sapienza nel 2003.
Questo
farmaco è sul mercato italiano dal 1985 (www.farmacovigilanza.org).
Test di valutazione del desiderio
sessuale su ratti e topi presso la società Glaxo (VR).
Ratti
e topi hanno una biologia della riproduzione completamente differente da quella
umana sia per tempi (durata della gravidanza, capacità di gravidanze ripetute)
che per modalità.
Studi di psichiatria presso
l’Università di Bologna nel 2004.
E’
assurdo riprodurre la complessità di patologie psichiatriche su animali, anche
solo per il fatto che la clinica psichiatrica si basa sul colloquio con il
paziente (Per

Studi sull’effetto del buio
nella plasticità corticale di topi e ratti presso il CNR di Pisa nel 2003.
Topi
e ratti sono animali notturni, l’uomo è diurno.
Test cruenti sugli animali:
Ricerche su xenotrapianti presso
l’Università di Padova.
Gli
animali (principalmente maiali e scimmie), sono utilizzati come serbatoi di
organi. Da circa 15 anni si eseguono ricerche su xenotrapianti senza alcun
successo, nonostante le false promesse di chi le esegue.
Test di tossicità sulla tossina
botulinica presso l’Istituto Superiore di Sanità.
La
tossina botulinica provoca una paralisi muscolare, facendo morire gli animali
in modo atroce quando sopraggiunge la paralisi dei muscoli respiratori. Ciò è
ancora più inaccettabile se si pensa che alcune applicazioni della tossina
botulinica sono di tipo cosmetico.
Studi sulla corteccia cerebrale
presso l’Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia, di Verona e di Bologna su
scimmie.
Di
solito questi studi prevedono l’impianto di elettrodi nel cervello degli
animali dopo un intervento chirurgico oppure l’asportazione di parti del
cervello.

22/03/2007 – La Società Oftalmologica Italiana affianca il progetto Sguardo
Futuro dell’Associazione Giuramento Onlus, concedendole di esporre il proprio
Logo nell’ambito del progetto Sguardo Futuro.
Si tratta di un grande
segnale di consenso da parte della Società Oftalmologica Italiana, cioè l’
associazione che raggruppa la quasi totalità dei Medici Oculisti Italiani:
venuta a conoscenza dell’importante lavoro di controllo e prevenzione in campo
oculistico messo in atto dai medici oculisti di Giuramento Onlus a favore degli
alunni delle scuole elementari e medie che ha preso il via dai Comuni dell’alto
Lazio, la S.O.I. ha deciso di affiancare il progetto, concedendo l’uso del
proprio Logo all’iniziativa, manifestando altresì il desiderio di conoscere
dettagliatamente i risultati degli screenings.
Questa concessione da parte
della S.O.I. suona come un premio al duro lavoro ed all’impegno profuso dai soci
di Giuramento Onlus e rappresenta un vero e proprio marchio di qualità e
serietà.
Alcuni medici oculisti di Giuramento, il Dott. Grasso, il Dott.
Gagliardi e la Dott.ssa Cima, coordinati dal Professor Marino, sono al momento
impegnati nel comprensorio di Cerveteri dove stanno visitando oltre 3000
ragazzi.

Soddisfazione condivisa, d’altronde anche dagli altri componenti lo
staff e dal Consiglio Direttivo di Giuramento Onlus, Presidente e
Vice-Presidente in testa, i quali ricordano come già in precedenza “la S.O.I.
avesse dimostrato reale interesse al progetto, attribuendo a Giuramento Onlus
l’annuale Premio S.O.I. SIFI”.

"La
ricerca senza uso di animali è possibile. Sostienila." Con questo
appello la
LAV Sicilia sabato 24 e domenica 25 marzo torna in piazza in 7
città
dell'Isola – Palermo, Catania, Caltanissetta, Enna, Piazza Armerina,
Ragusa e
Siracusa (e nelle principali piazze d'Italia) – per invitare i
cittadini a
firmare la petizione con la quale si chiede al Governo l'impegno
a garantire
l'uso e lo sviluppo dei metodi sostitutivi all'impiego di
animali a fini
sperimentali nell'Unione Europea.
Dopo 20 anni sta per essere modificata
la direttiva UE 86/609 che disciplina
la ricerca su animali: un'occasione
unica per fare concreti passi in avanti
verso una ricerca efficace e senza
animali. Ogni anno, solo in Italia, quasi
1 milione di animali sono
sottoposti a esperimenti crudeli, che non
forniscono neppure dati utili alla
salute umana. Le alternative già esistono
(si allega documento di
approfondimento) e in molti casi hanno completamente
sostituito l'utilizzo
degli animali. Se fossero accolte le nostre proposte,
ogni anno sarebbero
salvati 43.000 animali in Italia e 300.000 in tutta
l'Unione europea.
Soprattutto, si getterebbero le basi per una progressiva
ma totale
sostituzione dell'uso di animali a fini sperimentali.
Il 24 e 25 marzo i
cittadini possono ricevere materiale informativo sul tema
e sostenere questa
campagna scegliendo l'uovo di Pasqua della LAV, in cambio
di un contributo
minimo di 10 euro.
A sostegno di questa campagna la LAV ha prodotto due
importanti e
approfonditi documenti: il dossier "Un'altra ricerca è
possibile. Metodi
sostitutivi alla sperimentazione animale" (si allega un
estratto), a cura
del settore Vivisezione della LAV e di qualificati esperti
in materie
scientifiche, e il nuovo video "Sperimentazione animale: un male
curabile".
Le richieste della LAV per l'Italia comprendono proposte come
il
finanziamento della Legge 413/93 (Obiezione di coscienza
alla
sperimentazione animale) nella legge finanziaria e l'attuazione del
"Piano
per i metodi alternativi" proposto dall'Associazione per rendere
operativo
l'impegno del programma elettorale del Governo (Per il bene
dell'Italia,
pag.153), che prevede la progressiva abolizione della
sperimentazione
animale: la LAV chiede due decreti di immediata attuazione
per rendere
obbligatorio l'impiego di metodi alternativi disponibili e per
vietare la
dissezione di animali nelle scuole primarie e secondarie,
promuovendo
il ricorso a esercitazioni che non facciano uso di animali.
Inoltre il
Piano prevede: 1) l'istituzione di un organo interministeriale con
il
compito di rendere operativo il Piano di attuazione dei metodi
alternativi,
istituendo un registro ufficiale aggiornato dei metodi
disponibili; 2)
la creazione di una commissione di controllo
sull'implementazione del
Decreto Legislativo 116/92 costituita anche da
esperti in materia di
metodi alternativi; 3) la destinazione del 30% dei
finanziamenti pubblici
per la ricerca biomedica, alla riconversione di
laboratori che usano
animali, in laboratori che impiegano metodi sostitutivi;
4) l'istituzione
di bandi, assegni di ricerca, la collaborazione con enti
quali
Farmindustria; 5) il patrocinio di progetti formativi e informativi
per
la diffusione della cultura dei metodi alternativi in scuole
secondarie
e università.
Le richieste della LAV per l'UE prevedono:
impegni concreti per la
diffusione dei metodi alternativi nell'ottica di una
progressiva e completa
sostituzione degli animali, attraverso finanziamenti e
politiche adeguate;
il bando dell'impiego di qualsiasi specie animale usata
per scopi didattici,
per esperimenti su sostanze d'abuso ed esperimenti
bellici, per testare
prodotti per la detergenza domestica, per esperimenti in
xenotrapianti.
I metodi sperimentali che non fanno ricorso ad animali
sono scientificamente
validi, quindi efficaci e sicuri, rappresentano una
realtà da finanziare e
sviluppare e sono già impiegati in alcuni
campi:
· sul totale delle ricerche condotte a scopo biomedico in
Italia,
nel 30% dei casi vengono utilizzati animali, mentre per la restante
parte
vengono utilizzati altri metodi: osservazione dei malati,
studi
epidemiologici, modelli matematici, ricerca su cellule e tessuti
coltivati
in vitro.
· Non si usano più animali per i seguenti
esperimenti: test di
gravidanza, test per la verifica della contaminazione
batterica di farmaci,
produzione di anticorpi (usati in diagnosi e ricerca),
molti casi di
verifiche igienico-sanitarie su alimenti (estrogeni, tossine
algali), alcuni
test di tossicità su sostanze chimiche (assorbimento cutaneo,
mutagenesi e
genotossicità, fototossicità, embriotossicità), produzione di
insulina,
produzione di acido ialuronico (ingrediente in formulazioni
cosmetiche e
farmaceutiche) e altre sostanze, crash test di
automobili.
· Qualificate riviste scientifiche, come il British Medical
Journal
nel 2004 e Nature nel 2005, hanno dimostrato che la messa a punto di
farmaci
e terapie utili è possibile grazie agli studi clinici su volontari e
non
alla ricerca su animali.
"La sperimentazione animale è, ancora
oggi ed erroneamente, considerata un
male necessario: in realtà si basa
sull'errore metodologico di poter
estrapolare i risultati ottenuti dagli
esperimenti su animali non umani agli
umani, nonostante le rilevanti
differenze biologiche di specie. Questo
comporta, nel caso della
sperimentazione dei farmaci che per legge richiede
test su animali e poi test
sull'uomo, che nel passaggio dagli uni agli
altri, 4 molecole su 5 vengono
cestinate a causa degli effetti avversi
osservati sull'uomo e non rilevati
sugli animali, con spreco di denaro e
soprattutto di tempo utile per salvare
i malati – dichiara Roberta Bartocci,
responsabile nazionale LAV settore
vivisezione – La Direttiva UE 86/609,
ormai ventenne, non è più attuale sotto
molti aspetti, così come il nostro
Decreto Legislativo 116/92, non tenendo
