  • Digital Radiology at the Villa Dental Clinic

    The radiology equipment of the Villa Dental Clinic is at our dentists’ disposal for every eventuality they have to deal with.

    The machines are all digital and online which means that the images can be viewed immediately from any computer throughout the Clinic. All patients are first given a panoramic x-ray to check if there are any bone or dental problems and identify areas of bone where eventual implants might be placed. . Should disease be detected, further, more in-depth periapical (classic dental) x-rays will be taken. These are much smaller in size but more accurate and detailed.

    The Clinic also possesses a latest generation CATSCAN: a Cone Beam Volumetric Tomography. It is the most advanced model with the best volumetric data acquisition available at present on the market: The Kavo 3D eXam

    There are numerous benefits to having diagnostic machinery of this level at our disposal:

    1) the amount of radiation is much lower compared to a traditional Catscan. With a traditional Catscan the patient is subjected to a dose of radiation equivalent to 60 panoramic x-rays, while with the Cone Beam the amount of radiation given is at most equivalent to 3 or 4 panoramics.

    2) the areas to be checked can be pinpointed with greater precision, thus avoiding radiating adjacent areas to no purpose.

    patients undergoing implant restoration or oral surgery in critical areas of the mouth ( e.g. ingrown mandibular wisdom teeth) can be examined immediately within the Clinic.

    4) the quality of the image is perfectly comparable to that of the traditional Catscan and can be loaded onto Nobelguide or Materialiste software for digital surgical planning

  • Alitosi: un disturbo che si può combattere.

    E’ un disturbo di tipo organico che si manifesta con l’emissione di odore sgradevole attraverso l’atto espiratorio o anche con l’eloquio. Viene avvertita prima di tutto dalle persone che circondano chi ne e’ affetto, il quale sovente non si rende conto del problema. A volte si può essere consapevoli del disturbo, anche se si avverte una sorta di ostacolo psicologico nell’esprimerlo.

    In condizioni normali l’odore del cavo orale può registrare delle variazioni nella sua intensità e tipologia in relazione ad alcune variabili quali l’età, il sesso, le abitudini alimentari. Tali cambiamenti possono manifestarsi durante l’arco della giornata. A tutti e’ ben noto il fatto di poter avvertire un gusto cattivo al risveglio, condizione senz’altro favorita dal calo del flusso salivare, oltre alla tipologia del cibo ingerito la sera precedente . Vi sono poi delle forme d’alitosi che hanno una maggiore importanza sotto il profilo medico, in quanto espressioni di malattie in atto, oppure conseguenza di terapie farmacologiche. A questo proposito e’ senz’altro utile sapere che la grande maggioranza delle forme di alitosi ha origine orale.

    L’odontoiatra ha quindi un ruolo certamente centrale nella intercettazione e nel trattamento del disturbo. La PARODONTITE (patologia di natura infiammatoria cronica che colpisce i tessuti di sostegno dei denti e che può condurre alla perdita progressiva degli elementi dentari) e’ la malattia orale che più frequentemente si manifesta con l’alitosi; anzi, in alcuni casi, proprio l’alitosi rappresenta un sintomo spesso precoce che il soggetto può iniziare ad avvertire prima di qualsiasi altro disturbo. L’emissione di alito pesante da parte di chi e’ affetto da malattia parodontale è dovuto alla presenza nell’ambiente orale di un’elevata quantità di composti volatili solforati, sono sostanze chimiche prodotte dal metabolismo di alcuni batteri responsabili della parodontite: tali microrganismi si annidano in elevatissime quantità nelle tasche parodontali, ovvero negli spazi formatisi tra gengiva e dente a seguito della distruzione dell’osso. Un’altra causa di alitosi può consistere in restauri dentaliquali, otturazioni imprecise, corone e ponti non più idonei.

  • Assistenza anestesiologica alla Clinica Odontoiatrica Villa

    Presso la Odontoiatrica Villa offriamo al paziente l’opportunità, durante gli interventi di implantologia e chirurgia orale ,di assistenza anestesiologica altamente qualificata, praticata dalla Dott.ssa Lucia Capellaro, nostro anestesista di fiducia Laureatasi presso l’Università degli Studi di Torino nel 1981, si è specializzata nella stessa università nel 1985 in Anestesia e Rianimazione. Nel 1992 ha conseguito la specializzazione in Farmacologia presso l’Università degli Studi di Pavia. Ha maturato esperienza, anche a livello internazionale, sia nel campo dell’Anestesia, della Rianimazione e della Terapia del Dolore, E’ stata relatrice a corsi e congressi di Anestesia in Day Surgery e Anestesia loco-Regionale in Italia ed all’estero.

    La presenza dell’anestesista è sempre consigliata nel caso di interventi su pazienti con problemi cardio-respiratori di una certa entità. L’assistenza anestesiologica oltre che garantire la sicurezza del paziente aiuta anche a prevenire l’insorgere del dolore post-chirurgico e assicura al paziente un sensazione di benessere e tranquillità intra-operatoria. Durante l’intervento infatti si applica al paziente un’infusione endovenosa tramite la quale si somministra analgesico, protettore gastrico e , se necessario, ansiolitico al fine di tranquillizzarlo al massimo.

    Tutti gli interventi vengono praticati nella nostra sala chirurgica, ambiente nel quale è rispettata la più stretta asepsi. La sala é dotata di cardio-monitor,defibrillatore, saturimetro, sfigmomanometro elettronico, fonte di ossigeno. L’assistenza anestesiologica inoltre si attua con stretto monitoraggio delle funzioni vitali ( monitor ECG, saturimetria 02, PAO).

  • Radiologia Digitale alla Clinica Odontoiatrica Villa di Biella.

    La Clinica Odontoiatrica Villa dispone di apparecchiature radiologiche che rispondono a qualsiasi esigenza degli odontoiatri che operano all’interno della struttura.
Tutte le apparecchiature sono digitali ed in rete per cui le immagini sono disponibili immediatamente in tutti i computer delle varie unità lavorative.

    A tutti i pazienti viene fatta una prima radiografia panoramica al fine di indagare la presenza di patologie a livello osseo o dentale e di valutare aree di osso in cui poter posizionare eventuali impianti.
L’esame radiologico in caso di presenza di patologia viene poi approfondito attraverso l’uso di radiografie periapicali (le classiche“lastrine” dentali), che sono di dimensioni molto più ridotte, ma maggiormente precise e dettagliate.

    La Clinica è infine in possesso di una TAC di ultima generazione: una tomografia volumetrica Cone beam ( a fascio conico) Il modello è quello più avanzato e con possibilità di acquisizione volumetrica maggiore che c’è attualmente in commercio: il Kavo 3D eXam.
I vantaggi del poter disporre di un apparecchiatura di questo livello nella nostra struttura sono molteplici:

    1) La dose di irradiazione é estremamente ridotta rispetto ad una TAC tradizionale.
Mentre con la TAC tradizionale la dose di irradiazione ricevuta dal paziente per un esame orale può arrivare a dosi equivalenti a 60 panoramiche, con la Cone Beam la dose é al massimo quella di 3-4 panoramiche!

    2) la centratura delle aree che ci serve indagare é molto più precisa e mirata e quindi ci evita di “colpire” zone adiacenti che non ci serve visualizzare.

    3) il paziente programmato per una riabilitazione con impianti o per interventi di chirurgia di orale in aree critiche (tipo denti del giudizio mandibolari inclusi) può essere immediatamente esaminato< senza dover ricorrere a Centri di radiologia esterni.

    ORTODOZIA NEL BAMBINO

    Presso la nostra Clinica consigliamo di effettuare la prima visita ortodontica a circa 4 anni, quando tutti i denti da latte sono ancora presenti in bocca. Questo con lo scopo di “intercettare” eventuali disarmonie dentali e/o scheletriche che, se non corrette in fase di crescita, difficilmente posso essere risolte più tardi. E’ dunque importante visitare il bambino precocemente per verificare se esiste una buona armonia tra le componenti anatomiche e dentali che costituiscono l’architettura cranio- facciale; se ciò non fosse bisogna intervenire tempestivamente per stabilire un giusto equilibrio e raggiungere un’occlusione corretta.

    E’ importante sottolineare come le abitudini viziate (succhiamento di ciuccio,pollice,labbro inferiore) e le funzioni tipiche dell’apparato buccale (deglutizione, respirazione, masticazione) se anomale possono influire negativamente sullo sviluppo dei denti e della faccia. Anche in questo caso la loro intercettazione precoce puo’ raggiunge un risultato che non è possibile ottenere dopo che la crescita è ultimata.

  • Villa Dental Clinic: innovative techniques for teeth whitening.

    A nice smile is a valid passport everywhere. Unfortunately bad eating habits, smoking, poor oral hygiene and other factors tend inexorably to yellow teeth, making the smile less bright. But what can be done to prevent the yellow teeth?

    The outer layer of a tooth is the enamel, which is composed of thin rods ( enamel prisms ) held together by a cementing substance and surrounded by an enamel sheath. The inner part is called dentine which consists of microscopic channels called dentinal tubules joined together. Yellow in appearance the various shades of dentine constitute the basis of tooth colour. Enamel, which in fact is translucent and colourless, reflects the underlying dentine. Most cases of yellowing teeth are the result of diet and age as enamel is not inert but absorbs and reacts to saliva. The sheath and the intra-prism cement absorb substances containing pigments ( food, cigarette smoke, coffee, wine etc ) which reduce the translucency of the tooth.

    Luckily new innovative solutions to this problem are now available, such as professional tooth whitening, which enable us to restore our patients’ “beautiful smiles”.

    This new procedure makes use of professional whitening gels activated by special led lamps which speed up the bleaching process. The whole treatment only lasts about an hour.

    Professional whitening is a safe technique which gives good results and can be repeated in time. Obviously the outcome of this treatment can differ from patient to patient depending on the structure of the teeth. Fundamental to obtaining long-lasting , effective results is correct oral hygiene.

  • Villa Dental Clinic: some successful cases

    At the Villa Dental Clinic we deal every day with complex clinical cases and, at times, with seemingly impossible to solve ones. Thanks to our experience and the preparation of our staff, however,
our patients always come back home satisfied and finally with a perfect smile . Here is a brief review of some real cases of success treated in the clinic.

    Case details This patient of 73, who had a chronic coagulation deficit, came to us for examination as he was interested in total restoration with implants. In a situation like this, the greatest risk was from possible haemorrhaging during and/or post-operation, especially in traditional-type surgery where the gum is stripped back. With the patient conscious but under sedation, we operated first, on the upper jaw, and then after two weeks, on the lower jaw. In both operations the teeth were extracted and the implants placed using minimally invasive procedures. In both the upper and the lower jaws of the patient the provisional crowns were screwed directly on to the implants the day after surgery.

    Case details This patient of 50 had had a removable partial denture on the upper jaw for years and the remaining teeth were very loose due to chronic periodontal disease. With the patient conscious but under sedation , we extracted the teeth and positioned the implants with the help of a surgical template obtained from a computerised plan ( Nobelguide ) which allowed us to keep surgical invasiveness to a minimum. At the same time we corrected the gum recession with connective tissue grafts. The following day the patient was provided with temporary fixed crowns screwed directly on to the implants. The permanent crowns were fitted 6 months after surgery

    Case details This patient of 18 was referred to us by her dentist two days after a road accident in which she had suffered the loss of a lateral incisor and upper right canine. Four days after this traumatic event two implants were placed directly into the sockets using flapless surgery to prevent scarring and recession of tissues in an area of the mouth which is extremely important from an aesthetic point of view. The same day as the operation, the patient was restored with two temporary crowns in resin screwed on to the implants. After 6 months these crowns were replaced with two single all ceramic crowns.

  • Villa Dental Clinic: leader in Europe in computer-guided implantology.

    The introduction of digital technology combined with Roberto Villa‘s vast experience in the field of immediate loading has generated significant added benefit for the patient. The Villa Dental Clinic uses the Nobelguide system for digital surgical planning which represents a breakthrough in oral implantology. A scan of the patient’s jaw is transformed by Nobelguide software into a 3D model which allows the computer to find the optimum position for the implants. The imaging is then sent via Internet to a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant in Sweden where a tailor-made surgical template is produced. This template allows us to be extremely precise when transferring the surgical plan carried out by us on the computer directly into the patient’s mouth.

    The first advantage of this technology is that it reduces the invasiveness of surgery ( Flapless surgery ). As a consequence physiological healing of tissues is quicker and pain, bleeding and swelling, normally associated with traditional implantology, are more or less absent. Most patients can usually get back to their everyday lives the following day. Another great advantage of this technology is that it can exploit areas of bone for positioning the implants, which cannot be detected in traditional surgery. This allows us to reduce enormously the number and duration of operations we have to perform on patients with limited amounts of bone.. Therefore, self-generated bone grafts (from the hip, skullcap or intraoral areas) or complex procedures of bone regeneration can be avoided, all in the patient’s interests.

    Furthermore, the Nobelguide system has been adapted by us so that it can be applied not only to the treatment of completely edentulous (toothless) patients but also to those requiring the extraction of remaining teeth. Thus, even in extremely complicated situations where there is a lack of residual bone, teeth can be extracted, implants placed in position and residual bone reconstructed with biomaterials, all in the one sitting. And also in these very complex cases we can provide the patient with a fixed, temporary crown to satisfy aesthetic and functional needs within 24 hours,at the most. In order to obtain the best aesthetic and functional results from dental implants, surgical invasiveness has to be kept to a minimum, operating times short, and survival in time high.

  • Uno studio scientifico del dottor Roberto Villa presentato al Convegno Internazionale di Implantologia Roma 2010.

    Il dottor Roberto Villa parteciperà al Convegno Internazionale di Implantologia 2010 a Roma dedicato al tema: “Un nuovo paradigma in implantologia”. Al convegno parteciperanno 200 tra i migliori specialisti italiani e stranieri in implantologia dentale e verranno presentati i risultati di diversi studi specialistici sulle nuove soluzioni per l’implantologia.

    Il dottor Roberto Villa presenterà i risultati del suo studio dedicato alla chirurgia flapless nella riabilitazione post-estrattiva: “Chirurgia senza lembo nelle riabilitazioni post-estrattive immediate: un percorso tra la biologia e l’estetica.” Le tecniche presentate in questo paper sono attualmente già in uso presso la Clinica Odontoiatria Villa.

    Dr. Roberto Villa is presenting the results of his study dedicated to flapless surgery in post-extractive rehabilitation : “Flapless surgery in immediate post-extraction rehabilitations: a tour between biology and aesthetics. “ The techniques presented in this paper are currently in use at the Villa Dental Clinic.

    Dr. Roberto Villa has a degree in Medicine (MD), 1979 and a degree in Dentistry (DDS), 1984, both from Turin University. He has attended seminars and courses at the most prestigious centres for Osseointegration in Sweden. Since the late 90s he has concentrated his attention on immediate function especially in post-extraction sites and has developed innovative surgical protocols, published articles and held lectures on this subject in Italy and abroad. His particular interest has been for computer-guided implant surgery for which he has created a personal protocol for use with Nobelguide in post-extraction sites and in complex situations where the residual bone is extremely limited.
