Three 2009 winners at the start: Corradini, Zelger and Schartmueller Italy’s Bandini, Moschen and Lambrugo challenge the Germans Cyclists vs. XC skiers at the 4th edition of the Italian race Start on Sunday at 7.30am local time in Predazzo – Trentino region Next Sunday, the 2010 Marcialonga Cycling will be once again ‘flying high’ through the Fiemme and Fassa valleys. The cycling race will kick off from the area near the ski-jumping stadium in Predazzo, the same venue that hosted several world competitions throughout the past 20 years and will be hosting the 2013 Nordic Ski World Championships. Last year the Italian race was won by Alexander Zelger and Astrid Schartmueller on the short distance race (80 km), and by Antonio Corradini and Anna Corona on the long distance race (135 km). Zelger, Schartmueller and Corradini already booked their bibs for next Sunday’s competition, while Corona won’t be at the start as she recently retired from competition. Among women, Italy’s Monica Bandini, Roberta Moschen and Italian National Marathon Champion Cristina Lambrugo will be battling with Germany’s Kerstin Brachtendorf and Anita Lihl, who won the 2009 World Cup Amateurs. The favorite to win the men’s race is with no doubt Corradini, who will be challenged by Italy’s Casartelli, Masiero, Orsi, Barbetta and Rizzi, and some other top athletes who, as always happens, will be registering for the race in the very last hours – entries are open until Saturday. In the meantime a few well-known XC skiers have registered to the race that goes through the alpine Lavazè, San Pellegrino and Valles passes. Swedish Jerry Ahrlin and Daniel Tynell are both quite popular in Trentino, and in Fiemme and Fassa valleys in particular, since the first won the Marcialonga Ski Marathon in 2007 and 2009 and finished second last January, while the second was third in last year’s race, but won three times the Swedish Vasaloppet. Italy’s Cattaneo, Debertolis, Vanzetta, Frasnelli and the Vuerich sisters will all be competing as well, but …on the saddle this time! At the start of the 2010 Marcialonga Cycling – scheduled at 7.30am local time – there will be around 1.400 athletes from 17 nations. The race is part of the new International challenge Worldloppet Cycling Races, the Supernobili serie and the Amatour World Cup.
